Infrastructure

image_chapter

Argentina is considered one of the more modern South American countries and while many larger cities will have every convenience of the 21st century many of the smaller and more remote towns are less likely to have these same conveniences and may greatly depend on the proximity to one of the larger cities. Phone service and electricity are readily available in most of the country but may not reliable in outlying areas. Internet services and cable television are both common in the larger cities.

Transportation in the country is provided in several ways. First an extensive rail system provides both goods and travelers access to most of the country. Within the large cities, public transportation is common and quite reliable. The road system within Argentina is constantly being improved and highways and expressways provide access to most of the country but in more remote regions dirt roads are common.

There are many smaller airports in the country. These smaller airports can provide air travel within the country. Buenos Aires is home to two major Airports, Ezeiza International Airport sees most international travel including flights from the U.S. and Europe while Aeroparque Jorge Newbery provides most travel within South and Central America.

When traveling in any foreign country it's wise to find out as much as possible about the medical facilities and services offered. Argentina has a very competent medical system in the more populated areas and the prices will be high as well. Travelers' medical insurance is recommended as there are no reciprocal health agreements with other health insurance companies outside the country. If you find yourself in need of medical attention payment will be expected upon services rendered if no travelers insurance is provided.

Security

Argentina is considered a safe South American country and travelers rarely experience any problems when visiting. However it is advisable to practice normal precautions no matter where you are. These precautions should include never leaving personal belongings unattended. Avoid carrying large sums of cash or expensive jewelry. Never roam the streets alone at night and always be aware of your surroundings.

Despite being safe, Argentina may do things differently than your country so knowing what's expected and the normal routine of common occurrences is important. Traffic accidents will require a trip to the police station so don't be alarmed, although you can be held there until the circumstances are determined and fault assigned. While many differences may surround the judicial system most tourists never experience any type of problems while in Argentina.
