Local Events

image_chapter

No trip to Argentina is complete without visiting one of the local festivals or celebrations. These events give the visitor a unique look at local customs and traditions not usually displayed. One of the most anticipated events in Argentina is Carnaval. This celebration is similar to Mardi Gras in America and the Carnivale celebrations in Rio de Janiero and Venice. The largest Carnaval in Argentina is held in Gualeguichu, a small town situated halfway between Buenos Aires and Iguaza Falls. This traditional celebration is a boisterous and energetic display of the countries eclectic costume song and dance.

Because Argentina is predominantly a Roman Catholic country, many of the country's celebrations revolve around the traditional holidays and events of the Catholic religion. Easter and Christmas are good examples of this as the country puts forth much energy celebrating these two very important holidays. Easter is a two week long celebration featuring a full reenactment of the passion of the Christ. While Christmas sees many of the traditions Americans have become accustomed to. Festive homes featuring holiday lights and nativity scenes are common as is the Christmas tree although in Argentina the Christmas tree can be any tree and is not limited to the evergreen. Most Argentineans enjoy a traditional feast of roasted meats and Christmas desserts improved upon with grilled vegetables and meats. Since Christmas in Argentina is in summer rather than winter many enjoy a late meal on Christmas eve then congregate outside to enjoy a balmy evening of fireworks and exchange gifts at midnight. On Christmas day many will flock to the beaches and enjoy the warm sand and sea.
