Events![]() Holidays are important in Brazil and Christmas may be the most celebrated of all holidays. Because Christmas is in the height of summer don't be surprised if Santa is tanned and wearing Speedos. Carnival in Rio is a nonstop 4 day party in which people from all over the world congregate to celebrate the last days of bodily pleasures before Lent. The city pulsates as revelers loosen their everyday constraints. Parades and dancing in the streets provide a free and easy atmosphere and gives visitors a glimpse of happy go lucky people consumed with having a good time. Several special days in Brazil mimic the US. Brazil's equivalent of Mothers Day or Dia das Maes is in May, Fathers Day or Dia dos Pais is in August, and Valentines Day or Dia dos Namorados comes in June. Even a clone of Halloween is becoming popular in Brazil although it is receiving opposition. It is referred to as Dia das Bruxas (Day of the Witches). Brazil celebrates local and regional holidays and festivals as well as national events. Patron Saint celebrations are prevalent in many regions and cities. Other festivals celebrate specific revolutionary events or freedom. Local heroes are sometimes the object of celebration as well.
