Cost of living

image_chapter

The economy in the Dominican Republic is based on the Dominican Peso (DOP). The country depends on two revenue sources, agriculture and tourism. Agriculture has been the main stay for many years but tourism in recent years has climbed steadily and the country is starting to experience what many other Latin American countries have already seen; an increase in foreigners and investors relocating and bringing money into the country.

Living expenses in most first world countries are high compared with many Central and South American countries. The Dominican Republic is one of the less expensive of these countries for one simple reason; it’s still an undiscovered gem. Retirees and investors can easily find homes at a ¼ of the cost of their homes in the U.S and Canada with comparable amenities. Electricity may be the costliest utility you’ll have and probably the least reliable. Cable television and internet services are usually less than the U.S. Food and other local goods are all reasonable while imports can be higher. Activities in the Dominican Republic are numerous and varied and can provide endless days of lounging on the beach, enjoying a few rounds of golf, hiking and fishing and all at a minimal cost.
