Cost of living

image_chapter

The cost of living in Honduras is a fraction of many modern countries and even other South and Central American countries have a higher cost of living. This low cost can be attributed to several factors including easy port access for cargo ships carrying imports, a somewhat depressed economy and tourism that is just now catching on.

Once tourists realize the vast expanses of beautiful and uncrowded shores and modern cities and a wealth of historical sites their growing numbers are sure to boost the economy and in turn costs rise including real estate and goods.

Because Honduras has a thriving agricultural community including fruits and coffee the cost of these items are low for high quality produce. Restaurants reflect this in their prices and the cost of a meal at a moderately priced restaurant can be well below what Americans and other foreigners have come to expect.

The banking system in Honduras is based on Lempiras and American dollars can be easily exchanged at Honduran banks. Be prepared to wait in line and if you know some Spanish you’ll have an easier time. The Bay Islands will accept American dollars as payment but the Bay Islands are the exception rather than the rule. ATM Machines are available and some dispense dollars which in turn will need to be exchanged. Getting money from the ATM normally gives you a good exchange rate. American credit cards are accepted at hotels and restaurants in most tourist destinations, but cash is often preferred in restaurants.
